How Long After Waxing Can You Have Sex?

If you’re getting your first wax, or have never been before, it can be super intimidating. There are lots of questions swirling in your head, like:

Having sex too soon can complicate the process and cause further irritation to the area. It can also lead to folliculitis, which looks like red bumps.

1. 24 Hours After Waxing

The first 24-48 hours after waxing is a time for healing and adjusting to the change in texture of your skin. This is why we recommend avoiding sexual intercourse during this time, as it can cause excessive friction on the extra sensitive area.

If you are planning to have a sexy time in the next 24 hours, we suggest you use lubricants to reduce discomfort and prevent unnecessary friction. Also, try to avoid putting on tight-fitting clothing that could rub the area and irritate it. Opt for maxi dresses, flowy pants and breathable cotton fabrics instead.

You should also not bathe right after your wax. This is because the fresh, smooth skin may irritate your pores and increase the chance of infection. Instead, take lukewarm showers and use a gentle cleanser and non-scented body wash.

Immediately after waxing, it is normal to see redness, similar to a light sunburn, tender skin and, in rare cases, small histamine reactions (hives). If this occurs, take an antihistamine and apply aloe gel or manuka honey.

It is also a good idea to wait a few days before getting into the water, especially public pools and beaches. It is because the open pores can get clogged with sweat, which might lead to an infection. You should also avoid using hot tubs, sauna and steam rooms during this period as the heat can irritate freshly-waxed skin.

2. 48 Hours After Waxing

If you’re prone to ingrown hairs or are worried about getting one after waxing, then it’s best not to have sex for 24 hours. That’s because the area is super irritated after getting waxed and having sex can introduce bacteria to the now open hair follicle. It’s also a good idea to skip the gym for 48 hours after waxing since sweat, friction, and bacteria (which thrive on sweaty skin) can wreak havoc on newly-waxed areas.

You’ll want to avoid any other physical activity that causes heat or friction for the same reason. This means no hot baths or showers (stick to cool to lukewarm), saunas, tanning beds, or any other body treatments that involve heat. It’s also a good idea not to wear tight clothing over the waxed area. That kind of friction can cause irritation or even a rash.

Don’t schedule your wax during your period either, since your cycle can make the area more sensitive and painful. Hellmuth says she’s had clients FaceTime their mom for moral support while she’s waxing them down there, but she prefers that you just take a tampon with you.

Lastly, you shouldn’t swim or go to the beach for a few days after waxing. This is because the salt in the water can irritate the skin. Plus, going in the water too soon can cause bacteria to enter the open hair follicles and clog them up.

3. 7 Days After Waxing

For the first few days after waxing, it is best to avoid anything that might irritate your vulva. This includes lotions, soaps, and other toiletries that contain fragrance or color. Instead, try something like Aveeno Skin Relief Fragrance-Free Body Wash, which is formulated specifically to soothe sensitive skin.

You should also avoid putting anything tight on your body right after your wax appointment. Tight clothing can rub against your sensitive, fresh nipples and cause chafing. Instead, opt for loose-fitting clothing such as maxi dresses and flowy pants in cotton fabrics.

In addition to avoiding things that will irritate the area, you should avoid sweating too much for at least 24 hours after your waxing service. This is because your pores are open after being ripped from the skin, and sweat can cause inflammation.

It is also best to skip the hot tub or swimming pool a few days after your waxing appointment. Think of your pores as exposed wounds — they can be damaged by water that is too hot or too cold, and it could lead to infection.

Additionally, you should take a shower instead of bathing in hot water. This is because direct contact with the skin can lead to irritation and, in extreme cases, infections. The same goes for a hot bath, which can lead to hair follicles getting irritated and inflamed.

4. 14 Days After Waxing

The vulva region is sensitive, and you may feel a bit uncomfortable after your waxing appointment. Hence, it’s not advisable to engage in sexual activities especially with your partner. This is because sex can cause friction which can further irritate the already traumatized skin. It can also lead to complications like folliculitis, a condition that looks like red bumps or pustules in the vulva area. In addition to this, the friction can also clog the pores which can increase the risk of infection.

According to dermatologist, Shari Lipner, the trauma of a wax can cause bacteria to enter the hair follicles, which is why it’s important to wait until your skin heals before having sex. And if you do, make sure to use the right hygiene products to avoid infections.

Also, you should avoid sweating as much as possible because sweat can irritate freshly-waxed skin. This is why you shouldn’t work out before or after a Brazilian wax. In fact, it’s a good idea to take a day off from the gym after your waxing appointment. Lastly, you shouldn’t use any exfoliating scrubs or loofahs on the areas you’ve recently had waxed because this can also irritate your skin. Instead, try using a gentle body wash like Ayate, which is also an excellent alternative to a traditional loofah.
